The Seed Search!
The seed selection process starts in January, we try to get our order in by the middle of January. We look at what we did last year, how things grew and our soil type. We start by going through the seed catalogues. Stokes, Veseys, High Mowing Organic Seeds, William Dam Seeds, and Johnny’s. Johnny’s and High Mowing Organic Seeds are both in the United States. Our favorite is William Dam Seeds, they are located in Ontario. We use stokes for anything that we grow that is not organic, like sweet corn and some decorative items. We shop through these seed catalogues, we first have to chose the variety we like, then we find the seed in organic and hopefully the best price possible. The prices are all usually similar, but sometimes one company won’t get a large supply and will up the price a little bit, so we have to keep an eye on the price. We are always trying new varieties, with new varieties we have to spend time reading the descriptions and doing our research! We have grown Cortland onions for 12 years, this is a really easy one for us, they do well on our farm. Tomatoes on the other hand the varieties come and go so we are always shopping around for tomatoes, with the exception of our grape tomatoes, we have used red pearl for awhile!
Have a great weekend!
