Visiting the Farm
Intern and Learn at the Farm
If you are interested in learning at TapRoot Farms and Fibre you can apply as an intern.
We are able to accept up to four interns at a time. The internship duration can be for 4 – 20 weeks.
We are able to provide interns with a private room in the farm house. The bathrooms and kitchen are shared. Interns are responsible for their own meals and groceries. A vegetable CSA box is provided for each intern each week and a 1/2 dozen eggs.
Internship Streams
TapRoot Farm Organic Production
Interns in the TapRoot Farm Organic Production stream will gain experience in all aspects of the farm including planning, seeding, planting, weeding, harvesting, fertility, post harvest care, preparing for the market, CSA and sales.
TapRoot Seed to Yarn Production (Flax and Wool Yarn Production)
Interns in Seed to Yarn Production (flax and wool yarn production) Stream will participate in all aspects of our fibre production including seeding, weeding, harvest, retting, processing flax and caring for sheep, washing wool, making yarn. Interns will be required to have a respirator to protect from dust and to have a FIT test (course to learn how to fit the mask properly). We can arrange for the fit test but the cost associated with the FIT test and the mask are the responsibility of the intern.
During an internship at TapRoot you can expect that you will work alongside others who have been doing this work for many years. They will share their experiences. You will also have the opportunity to meet with Josh and Patricia to discuss various aspects of the farm and fibre and to have a Q&A. You can expect to have focused 1 hour per week of q&a time. That time may happen while moving from one field the next, or during a crop check.
All Interns will also be involved in the community garden for a minimum of 2 hours per week assisting with the garden plots.
The work day at TapRoot changes depending on the time of year. Typically we work Monday – Saturday 8AM – 5PM. In summer that changes to 7AM – 6PM. Sunday animal chores need doing but it does not require a whole day. Interns will create a schedule with Patricia based on the learning and task schedule. We expect a minimum of 25 hours dedicated to your internship at TapRoot. Outside of those 25 hours you are invited to continue contributing and learning at the farm, seek a part time job, explore the region, engage in your own additional learning.
If you are looking to get your hands into it and to experience the day to day work and needs of the farm, this may be a helpful opportunity for you. If you are looking for a structured curriculum internship, we may not be a good fit for you. You will have the opportunity to learn what we do, why and how. For us at the farm, we enjoy meeting new people and we appreciate you sharing your skills and talents with us in whatever ways they may be helpful on the farm.
If you are interested in an internship please email patricia@taprootfarms.ca or what’s app and include your up to date CV, a cover letter explaining why you would like to come intern at TapRoot Farms or TapRoot Fibre and the dates you would like to come.
