Week 48 TapRoot Farms CSA Newsletter

Hi everyone!

Yesterday I (Teri) attended a "Market Farming" workshop in Truro with Jody and Jean Paul from Roxbury Farm in New York.  They run an impressive 1100-member CSA on a 300 acre farm, with 45 acres of veggies, as well as pastured sheep, poultry, pigs, and cattle.  I really enjoyed hearing about all their efficiencies and how they do things, and like most workshops I attend, I picked up a few tips that I am excited to implement in our work at TapRoot.  One was for their CSA newsletter: They have an "Important Notices" section, so that members who don't want to or have time to read the entire newsletter cover to cover won't miss out on important info.  So, as you can see below, I am going to start doing this from now on:

IMPORTANT NOTICES:

Salmontail River Farm Sausages

We are happy to be invited to join the TapRoot meat CSA. Justine and I thought it would be nice to offer you a Taster Pack of 5 varieties so that you might try some of the flavors we have. Our ingredients are local whenever possible and we raise our animals slowly and with care. We use no preservatives and minimal packaging. The plastic wrap we have used is to try to prevent the flavors mingling in the packet and is not something we would use in a single flavor pack. I have not put the usual back label with the ingredients as with 5 different sausages in this pack the list was very long! I will post them up on our Facebook page if anyone is interested (and they are shared on the TapRoot facebook page). I do hope you enjoy them. Please do visit our Facebook page to learn more about us and our farm. Feedback is always welcome.

My Manitoba Guests - By Teri

My Mom and Aunty Jayne visited this past week from Manitoba.  They are here to help with some wedding planning (3 months away!), and to see where Jon and I work and live, as well as exploring the beautiful valley and province of NS.

On Friday, we had a tour of TapRoot Farms, complete with us helping make shares with Tim for Saturday-  To the right is a photo of my Mom and I!  We had lunch at the farm and some labels I had ordered arrived, so we labelled dozens of jars of nettle jelly, nettle thyme jelly, and nettle mint jelly.  (These are now available in add ons, under "Dry Goods", if you'd like to order some).  We helped Jon with animal chores by collecting eggs, and made a delivery to Noggins, where Erlene explained how the apple washing and packing line works.  My Mom has her own market garden in Manitoba (Brown Sugar Produce), so all of this was very interesting for her.  Aunty Jayne is also an avid gardener, and used to work in my Aunty Nancy's greenhouse in Winnipeg, so you can see where my green thumb originated!

It was a great trip, I was so glad to see them, and it was lovely to have a little bit of time off!  Thanks for visiting, Mom and Aunty Jayne! (They depart tonight, so it's back to work for me tomorrow... Crossing my fingers it doesn't snow!)
