Week 39 (Jan 11-17) TapRoot 2016

Very brief this week:

Thanks so much for your kind emails! They mean the world on these cold days and long days of planning and farming together. Many many thanks to you!

Recipes from Denise's Test Kitchen

Nothing tastes better on a snow day than warm baked goods. :) These raspberry white chocolate scones are delicious and super easy to make--bonus! Add a pat of butter and relax with a cuppa tea. The snow's not going anywhere.

I want warm comfort food in the winter. My body doesn't want a cold salad--it wants warm veggies. I stumbled upon this recipe for fried cabbage and noodles last winter and we make it all of the time at our house. The caramelized onions are such a nice addition! It calls for pancetta but I usually add a vegan sausage as a replacement. For other veggie folks out there, I like the Field Roast brand.

Wondering what to do with dried nettles? "This infusion of nettles and peppermint packs more energy per cup than any stimulant, and without the downside of caffeine or stimulating herbs like cayenne and ginger." So says the Nourishing Gourmet, and I have to agree. It doesn't just perk me up--it sharpens my focus in that late-afternoon energy slump. I sometimes add a bit of honey, but I like it just as well without.

This is one of the recipes that turned me into a turnip lover. One caveat: the recipe calls for steaming the turnip, tossing it in the sauce, and then serving. I steam the turnip lightly, then roast it, then toss it in the mustard thyme sauce. The extra step is worth it.

Have a wonderful week of cooking, everyone! Remember to bend your knees and keep a straight back when shovelling! :)
