Welcome to Week 36!

I am starting to get a lot of questions about Christmas, so wanted to clarify what the schedule is:

Dec. 16 - 21: Double share week

Dec. 23 - 28: No deliveries (covered by double week the week prior)

Dec. 30 - Jan 4: Week off, no deliveries (included in 50 week share purchase as one of the vacation weeks)

Jan 6  - 11: Regular deliveries resume.

For the Birds - By Tim C.

When I moved home to Nova Scotia and bought my own house I inherited a brambly yard full of life. All variety of mammals have passed through, some stopping and setting up shop until I gently encouraged them along. They still visit at night, but have stopped trying to move into my basement. The mammals are fun but drive my beagle crazy. It’s the birds we prefer.

I feed birds. I ease up in the summer when there’s plenty for them, but tend to put out seed over the winter. The spooky doves, fearless chickadees, bossy jays, proud pheasants, and elusive flickers are among my favourites, but I most enjoy boasting about my, not one, but two pairs of cardinals who stop by each day.

So here’s the deal: TapRoot Farms has a stock of GMO-free, black oil sunflower seeds: They are for sale as an add-on (under "Other Goodies"). The seeds are a high energy source and make excellent feed for many of the birds who stay throughout the winter. I have prepared 4 pound bags.  The sunflower seeds will eventually be used as pig feed, but we wanted to give all bird enthusiasts a chance to stock up for winter.


2013 Free Range Chickens - By Justine

We had a free range license for 1000 chickens this year. We grew five flocks of 215, with our first chicks coming in April, and the last coming in August. All the whole chicken we have left, about 250, are in two of these freezers, the rest have been in the meat share this summer. After we use these up in the next few weeks we will be buying in our chickens from local producers. Next year our goal is to produce enough chickens to see us through the entire season, with whole, half, quarters, and pieces on offer. No Farms, No Food Gala - Thursday December 5th at the Old Orchard Inn

To the right is a photo of Josh with THE VERY FIRST LINEN YARN EVER PRODUCED AT TAPROOT FARMS!  It is a donation for the silent auction at the NF2 Gala this Thursday, an organization that Patricia is involved with.  We are (obviously!) very excited about this landmark achievement, as we get closer each day to Patricia's goal of producing a piece of clothing from the farm this year!!

The flax used in this skein of linen fibre was grown and harvested during the 2013 season.  It has been retted, broken, scutched, and hackled at TapRoot by Amy on traditional small scale flax equipment made at Ross Farm Museum, and then spun by a local spinner. 

Also included in the silent auction is three skeins of wool, spun by Justine (& the wool is from her sheep, natural color variations!).  They are in the photo to the left <--.  Both the linen and the wool are 100% Nova Scotia women farmer made!  How awesome is that?!?!

 THE THIRD ANNUAL DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU'VE GOT 'TIL IT'S GONE IS FAST APPROACHING AND IT IS GOING TO BE AWESOME!

We all had such a fantastic time the past two years opening the December Holiday Season in good cheer while raising money for sustainable farming.  It has stayed with each and every one of us as a reminder of what makes our valley the greatest place to be.

Now things are underway for another stellar evening:

    Meadowbrook Farms is booked to prepare and serve a whole, spit-roasted pig.
    Peter Muttart will be our MC and auctioneer for the evening.
    The evenings musical selection will soon be annouced.
    The silent and live auction items are amassing!

ALL proceeds from the dinner will be evenly split between the Annapolis Valley Farmland Trust  Society and Farmers Helping Farmers  (for sustainable farming projects in Kenya).

Brussels Sprouts Crostini Recipe - I have a glut of brussels sprouts right now and so I am going to make this this weekend!

How to use Kohlrabi - this website has some great suggestions and tips, as well as the following soup recipe.  I must confess that Kohlrabi is not usually the first thing eaten in our house.  I am planning on trying this soup this week, too!

Creamy Kohlrabi & Carrot Soup

2 kohlrabi, peeled
1 lb. white potatoes (about 5 small), peeled and diced
3 to 4 medium carrots, peeled and diced
1 small onion, chopped
1 tablespoon butter
2 tablespoons fresh thyme, leaves stripped from their stems and chopped
1 tablespoon fresh rosemary, chopped
1 – 32 oz. box of chicken broth
2 cups of water
1 teaspoon of Hungarian paprika (I used smoked paprika)
1/2 cup heavy cream
1/2 cup sour cream
salt & pepper

<-- Gobble, Gobble!  These are a couple of the turkeys that are left.  The breed is a heritage breed, broad-breasted bronze, and they are gorgeous in their own slightly awkward and ugly turkey way!  Jon is putting up a greenhouse near their pen, and they call back at him when he is hammering and making noise.  It's pretty funny!
