Week 1 TapRoot Farms CSA Newsletter - Welcome!

WELCOME to the 2014-15 season of TapRoot Farm's Community Shared Agriculture Program!

I thought-- just this once-- I'd spell out the three things you are helping to grow by being a part of a CSA: Community, Sharing, and Agriculture.  We certainly appreciate your commitment to the farm this season, and thanks to you and our amazing farm team-- it's going to be a great one!

Your first newsletter contains a few Hellos from the TapRoot Team, a note from Noggins, some share tips from Falicia, and a couple of recipes from our favourite cookbook here at the farm.  I am including some links to blog posts that will help you as you get started if you are a new member as well.

The farm amazes me. Here's my TapRoot, Sunday night supper the night before the new season. Ingredients from the farm (photo left):
pea shoots, red onion, sweet potatoes, beets, tomatoes (fruit share), sauerkraut,  dried thyme, red potatoes, quail (meat share), dried summer savory,  Tideview Cider, and a leek!

Hi, my name is Jem and at the moment I help make up the veggie share boxes and load them in the van and on three days a week I deliver the boxes. I won't be dressing up and greeting you as in the photo, but I will do my best to make you feel welcome in the CSA. I'm looking forward to meeting you all.

Teri: I am absolutely stoked for the start of the new season of shares.  I feel like those who have stayed from last year are all amazing members, and the new folks I have been interacting with the past few months are great, too-- so, it's shaping up to be the best year ever!  I am particularly excited about working with Adrien at Noggins to get you more info about the fruit shares and Noggins fruit growing practices this season!

Justine: Welcome to a new CSA season from the meat share! I'm very excited about all that's going on at the farm this year. We've got non-GMO grain being grown locally for us, ducks being incubated by another local farmer, we'll be welcoming our first beef herd later this spring, and we have chicks coming on Friday. Hopefully in four weeks when the chicks are ready to go outside, we'll have a little more green for them to forage around in!

welcome all...i am josh. my job at taproot is to help out where needed. somedays i am doing animal chores as i am this morning or somedays i am working in the office. my favourite part of the job is seeing our farm goodies ready to go from our hands to yours . i know kind of corny but true:)

 


Note from Noggins Corner Farm -- By Adrien

March 24th, 2014 marked a cause for great celebration at Noggins Corner Farm!  Although it may not seem like a big deal, we regard the first day of pruning the apple trees as the start of the growing season.  All winter the trees have been resting and everyone at the farm has been working inside.  With orchard work back in swing we now know that warmer weather, green leaves and beautiful apple blossoms aren't too far off!  The robins and geese have returned, the crews are out in the orchards and the sun is feeling warmer by the day.  Happy spring everyone!


Planning Ahead in a CSA -- By Falicia

Being part of a CSA was a very new idea to me when I started at Taproot Farms in 2011 and to be honest, I really had no idea what to do with all of the food that we received.

Now, two and half years later my family and I have found a system that works well for us. I thought I would share a few of the things that have made being part of the CSA very enjoyable, other than getting lots of yummy veggies each week.

The big thing with us (my fiance, Nathan and I) is planning. This was not a concept I really associated with food and meal prep. Now our weekly routine involves looking online on Sunday to see what is going to be in the shares. You would think working on the farm we may get the upper hand and more time to prepare for what is coming in the following weeks share but honestly, I really enjoy being part of the CSA and look online just like every other member to see what is coming in the shares. At this time I also search through the add ons and see what is available just in case something jumps out at me that I would like to order.
